This party represents the inhabitants of the east of the country (Cyrenaica) who mostly live in the coast between Benghazi and Tobruk, under the leadership of the National Transitional Council (30% of the population). The council is a diverse mixture of people until a few months ago prominent in the Gaddafi regime (including those planning Saif’s coup), political exiles, and idealists.
This council is not universally popular, as some members have blood on their hands from their previous association with Gaddafi. The National Transitional Council is the most formed political opposition entity and effectively controls the east of the country. Its stated aim is to guide Libya to democracy, and abandon power at the next election. However other Libyans fear that power may concentrate in the east of the country or into the council itself. They have the support of the international community, who perhaps are less aware of history of the members. Important personalities are Mustafa Abdul Jalil .Mahmoud Jibril, Abdul Younis, Khalifa Haftar, Mahmound Shamam.
